''Le Baroudeur'' Claude Rey-Mermet was born in 1936 on the south of Switzerland. His nickname ‘’Le Baroudeur’’ (fighter and adventurer). In 1955 he passes his truck driving license and starts to drive national run with a Saurer 5DF. Beginning of the 60’s he quickly find his way in doing international road transports to Germany, France Portugal and UK. In 1962, will he was dining in a truckstop near Bern, talking with a fellow driving for Wuthrich. The chap asked to Claude about his destination; Claude proudly says: I’m going to Lisbon! And You? I start tomorrow my 3th trip to Iran! Enough said that where I want to go too! Le Baroudeur was very well known on the run, big talking man, sometime transforming a pub in boxing field but most of all a man with only one word!
He was so passionate by his long run job that when Friderici was asking him to take holiday he was preferring to driving for another company to Middle-East then to lay somewhere in a beach. In 2000 he decides to enjoy his retirement in Morocco, coming back time to time to Switzerland. Claude ‘’le Baroudeur’’, past away on August 25 2008, after a striking down tumour. It had made the decision to choose the euthanasia, when it would have enough of it, (in Switzerland, it is an authorized practice). He left with dignity; all is capacities intact, facing the reality with courage. Together with the entire Toprun fellow, I would like to express our deepest respect for what Claude has done for the trucker’s profession. The following pages are a tribute to his truck driver life. |

Summer 1979 - I will never forget this memorable journey to Pakistan
With my Kenworth K100 and a 2 axels steptrailer, I went to Ulm (D) to load a crane with all its aggregates, a very heavy load destined to Tarbela Dam in the North-East of Pakistan. After a short driving to the border between Germany and Austria, 3 tires of my trailer had already blown. No doubt the trailer is not made to handle so much weight! |

With only one more spare wheel and 15’000Km to go, what
I should do?… I phone the Friderici office to share with them my troubles;
order was given to me to continue but not to exceed the speed of 40 km/h,
which I will respect scrupulously. Just before Maribor (YU); “PFFFFFF” my
last tire blown away. Impossible to find, along the way, tires of the same
size, I decide to try to fill up my spare wheel with pieces of rubber cut
out from exploded ones. I had an appointment in Zagreb with another fellow from Friderici, Jacky was also going to Pakistan with his K100. Just after Maribor, I was able establish a radio contact with Jacky. Travelling between 20/40 km/h maximum, it took me one full day and part of the night to reach Jacky which was waiting for me on the TIR parking of Zagreb. After a short night and a copious breakfast we leaved full South, Jacky behind me, running 35-40 km/h max. A few hours later my last spare wheels, stuffed with rubber, die. Now on, Jacky’s spare wheels will be my last chance… |
| Despite all,
via Nis (YU), Sofia (BG), Istanbul, Ankara, Sivas, Erzurum, Gurbulak (TR)
and Tabriz (IR), the meter added the kilometres. With the experience, we where able to change a wheel in less than 10 minutes! Each one knew perfectly is job, the puncture announced by radio, Jacky jumped of its Ken, jack in the hand, will I was already starting to unlock the bolts. The bush telegraph had come to reinforce our radios,
each lorry driver coming back from Middle-East where offering us spare
tires! To give even more spice to our adventure, just before arriving in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Jacky orders me to stop immediately! The rear axle of my semi-trailer was sliding dangerously! Indeed several leaf springs where broken! We temporarily repair it with trunk of tree, sawn in lengths with a small hacksaw. … The wood placed between the axles, blocked with chains and straps, let us to complete the remaining 70 km separating us from the city. In Kandahar, after one day of research. We located the
leaf springs in a scrap yard, we bargain during hours to reduce the price
from 400 to 100$. Still remained to find a garage equipped rather well to
cut the metal at the correct length. After those few days of forced stop, we left in direction of Kabul then to Pakistan, ready to face the Khyber pass with his impressing and vertiginous ravines. It was truly a ‘’tour de force’’, a real nightmare, 32 tires were destroyed. The journey took us two times longer then planned. Eté 1977 - Un tour sur le Pakistan que jamais je n'oublierai.
Avec mon Kenworth K100
attelé à une semi-remorque surbaissée 2 essieux jumelés, je suis monté à
Ulm (D) chargé une grue sur pneus ainsi que tous ses agrégats câble etc,
un chargement très lourd avec pour destination le Barrage de Tarbela au
Nord-est du Pakistan. |

| J'avais rendez-vous à Zagreb (YU) avec Jacky de Friderici, qui lui aussi
allait au Pakistan avec son K100. Peu après Maribor (YU), j'établis une
liaison radio avec Jacky, il l’avait réinstallée car pour traverser la
Yougoslavie les émetteurs sont formellement fortement interdit (les
Youyous vous la séquestre s’il ne vous la détruise pas sur le champ).
Voyageant entre 20 / 40 km/h maximum, il m’a fallu un jour complet et une
partie de la nuit pour rejoindre Jacky qui m'attendait fidèlement sur le
parking de Zagreb. Après une courte nuit et un petit déjeuner copieux nous partons plein Sud. Jacky derrière moi, nous roulons à 35-40 km/h max. Quelques heures plus tard ma dernière roue de secours, bourrée de caoutchouc, rend définitivement l’âme. Dés à présent je ne peu compter que sur les roues de secours de Jacky. Malgré tout, les kilomètres s’additionnaient au compteur en passant par Nis (YU), Sofia (BG), Istanbul, Ankara, Sivas, Erzurum, Gurbulak (TR) et Tabriz (IR). Avec l'entraînement, nous avions réussi à changer une roue en moins de dix minutes ! Chacun connaissait son rôle, la crevaison ou l'éclatement signalée par radio, Jacky sautait de son "Bahut" cric en main, alors que moi je commençais déjà à desserrer les boulons. |

Le téléphone arabe était venu renforcer nos radios, chaque routier qui remontait de l'Orient, à vide, et qui en avait la possibilité, se proposait de nous laisser un pneu. 21 jours et 17 pneus furent nécessaires pour rejoindre Téhéran. M. Ayoub, notre transitaire en Iran, nous y accueillait avec une bonne nouvelle ! Une dizaine de chauffeurs Friderici nous avaient laissés leurs roues pour nous permettre de poursuivre notre voyage sur le Pakistan. Pour corser encore plus l’aventure, peu avant d’arriver à Kandahar en Afghanistan, Jacky m’ordonne de stopper immédiatement ! L’essieu arrière de ma semi se mettant dangereusement de travers ! Effectivement plusieurs lames de ressors sont cassées ! On dépanne provisoirement avec des plots en bois, sciés de longueurs avec une petite scie à métaux… Une fois le bois placé entre les essieux, bloqués avec une chaine et des sangles, il nous a été possible de parcourir les 70 Km nous séparant de la ville. Sur place, après une journée de recherche, on débusque chez un ferrailleur des lames ressorts, pour lesquelles il a fallu parlementer durant des heures pour faire descendre le prix de 400 à 100$. Restait encore à trouver un garage assez bien équipé pour couper les lames à la bonne longueur ainsi que percer les trous de goujons au bon endroit. Malgré toutes nos recherches, ce maître d'œuvre restait introuvable. Comme le hasard fait (souvent) bien les choses, un soir, au souk, ou l'espoir n'était pas encore trop altéré, un Monsieur pris place près de nous, un dialogue s’installa. Il était professeur dédié à la formation d'apprentis mécaniciens, soudeurs etc. à l'université de Kandahar. C'est ainsi que le lendemain à 8h00, débuta la réparation des suspensions, trois jours furent nécessaire pour couper l'acier car l’acétylène était générée avec des morceaux minerais mélangés avec un peu d’eau. Après ces quelques jours d’arrêt forcé on est repartis en direction de Kaboul, puis du Pakistan, prêt à affronter l’impressionnant Khyber pass et ses ravins vertigineux. Ce fut véritablement un tour de force, une vraie hécatombe, 32 pneus furent détruits. Le trajet dura deux fois plus long que planifiée. De retour en Suisse, mon patron, m’informa, sans stupeur, que le bénéfice du transport allait être largement dans les chiffres rouges...
