SAVE THE TAHIR !!!
On the way
to Iran, on the eastern part of Turkey, the Tahir pass was one of the
most feared and mythic place of the Middle-East run.
This road was the only authorized itinerary between Erzorum and Agri.
Taking the traffic up to 2400 mt high. The pavement was gravel with a
climbing percentage of 14% on loose surfaces.
The winter was a terrible sufferance for the man and the machine,
bringing often temperature even worst than -20°c.
The local people where badly upset by the continues flow of truck
passing trough the Tahir village, living behind them dust, smog and
detritus.
The drivers and the transports company paid an heavy tribute with
almost daily major accident and injury.
The transit via the Tahir started on the 60’s up to 1977 then the
existing military road was open to traffic avoiding by that to climb
the pass.
Beppe and Pasquale, two friends from Italy went there to rediscover, 35
year later, this mythic way.
Since that time the Tahir as been used only by seldom local traffic and
the road is now almost totally destroyed by the extreme weather
condition of this area.
On the following slideshow, I have tried to match 30 years old photos
with actual shoot made by Beppe and Pasquale in 2006!

Sur la route
de L’Iran, en traversant l’est de la Turquie, le col du
Tahir était certainement un des passages plus redouté et
mythique de la ‘’Ligne’’.
Cet itinéraire était le seul autorisé entre
Erzorum et Agri, obligeant le trafic à monter à plus de
2400 mt. Avec des pentes de 14% sur une surface de gravillons, dans des
conditions climatiques extrêmes atteignant souvent les -20°c
en hiver, ainsi qu’une population locale excédée
par le flot incessant de camions. Le Tahir à lui seul a fait
payer un lourd tribut au monde du transport routier tant en hommes que
en équipement.
Utilisé depuis les années 60 et jusqu’en 1977,
année à laquelle la route militaire existante fut
finalement ouverte au trafic.
Beppe et Pasquale, deux amis italiens sont retournés 35 plus
tard sur le Tahir. Ils ont retrouvés une route quasiment
à l’abandon, rarement utilisée par le trafic local.
Dans le diaporama suivant, j’ai essayé de faire
coïncider mes images d’archives avec les photos faites en
2006 !
